don't let this trip you up

I'm just gonna apologize right now to every Australian for any future time-related snafus.

I can do a lot of things, but timezone calculations trip me up.

I could've sworn I had confirmed my Q&A session for the women of web designers* summit for Thursday night at 8:00pm.

The 1 hour countdown email reminder I got at 7pm Tuesday told me otherwise.

No matter what the productivity bros wanna tell you, most people check their email multiple times a day.

Turns out, 42% of people check their email 3-5 times a day. And 19% check it over 20 times a day.**

Social media has its place (I mean, how else am I going to share a video of a koala snoring to a dear former client?)

But email is where it's at.

So when in the Q&A session I heard from a few designers that they were putting off starting a newsletter, I decided I'm making it my mission to get everyone ready to hit send.

I come from a time when we had to hand-code newsletter templates (my OG web designers will understand my broken nested table nightmares).

But these days the tech is easier than ever.

And my favorite newsletter tool, Kit,* is always adding the best new features that let you:

  • sell simple digital products (like ebooks, classes and workshops)
  • easily tag and segment your audience (so you can send targeted emails to the right people without annoying your whole list)
  • connect to a ton of apps (like Canva, Circle, Shopify, and more)
  • build good-looking landing pages in under 5 minutes
  • set-up automated emails that do the heavy lifting for you
  • get recommended by other creators (this feature alone has added thousands of new subscribers to my list)

It's easy to get started with Kit.*

I'm a fan of the Creator Pro plan (you know I love all the bells and whistles like in-depth reporting and advanced A/B testing), but if you're just starting out, the Creator plan gets you access to great features. And if you're watching your pennies, the free plan will get you off the ground - you can always upgrade later as your business evolves.

The summer of email is on.

you've got this,
Michelle

p.s. **email stats are wild - 50% of consumers made a purchase directly from email. Count this as your nudge to send more emails!

p.p.s. duly convinced to start your newsletter, but not sure what to write? check my recent nugget: bored of writing emails?

If you're new here—or if you’re like me and can’t remember what you did last week—read the previous email in this series: does Google know who you are?Curious how to get your own Google Knowledge panel (the overview that shows up when someone Googles your name?) Step 1. Use a tool like https://kalicube.pro/tools/knowledge-graph-explorer to search for your name. You should see a list of results like this image below. Click the "see on Google" link to see if it matches your info. (In my case,...

Reviewing a new site design with one of my favorite clients this week, she asked me a question. Why don't I show up the same way in Google as other dudes in her field? And by "that way" she meant the following format when she Googles her name. (I'm showing my client Laura Belgray's panel as an example above - go ahead, google her name and see what shows up!) This block of info at the top of the search results is called a Google Knowledge Panel. The display is generated based on info stored and...

One of my best friends like to surprise me in the best ways.We got in late Monday night from a quick trip to NYC to celebrate my nephew's 21st (and to hang with really cool clients over the best, longest brunch ever - thanks VV)! I went to water my plants and saw that Monty, my mini monstera, was missing from his perch on the kitchen windowsill. Now Monty's needed some TLC for a minute - he'd outgrown his pot but I haven't had the energy (or frankly the knowhow) to properly rehome him. I knew...
