hide your cookies, I'm climbing cabinets again

These days, my college roommate Justin and I communicate mainly through inappropriate memes we dm each other. I'll probably get cancelled if those ever get out.

He's one of my dearest friends - even though he used to hide the good cookies on the top shelf in our kitchen. He's 6'7" and I'm pocket-sized. Joke's on him though - I've always been able to climb kitchen cabinets. Short girl solutions.

Back in college we'd spend most of our nights in the computer lab making fake websites and teaching each other photoshop tricks.

Turns out that was a better use of my time than my art history degree.

I thought I'd end up cataloguing objects in the basement of the Smithsonian.

He thought he'd be stuck at an ad agency editing banner graphics for banks.

Now he owns a boutique fitness studio in San Francisco and I do this.*

Know what we both didn't think we'd need to learn?

How to write copy.

When I first started writing content for my business, I used footnotes. Footnotes. I thought everything had to be academic and formal. It felt like a chore to write content that I thought would be useful (never mind if it actually connected with my audience).

What changed?

  1. I designed stuff for Laura Belgray. (I'm still proud of the site I made her a few years back.) A side benefit of designing for a copy expert? You get to see inside their content. I started learning about the art of storytelling and how to write like a real person.
  2. I started writing more. One of the best ways to get better at something is to just DO IT MORE. Writing a blurb every once in a while probably isn't going to make a dent. I don't write my newsletters, blog posts or product copy all in one go. I'll set my timer for 30-45 minutes and knock out some words. I'll write a bunch, then edit later. I find it's hard to be both in creation mode AND editing mode at the same time.
  3. I started collecting stories and tips. If you've been on my list for a while, you know I'm all about the nugget - and my notes folder is full of half-baked ideas and story chunks. With everything I write, I make it a point to have at least one valuable tool, tidbit or strategy that my reader can use.

Now I have folks writing me every week that my newsletter is one of the only ones they look forward to reading.

(Please keep telling me this btw - my midwestern ego can always use a boost.)

So whenever I see a way to help folks who want to know how they can add personality to their copy, I'm keen to share it.

In just under 2 weeks, my friend (and fellow old dog enthusiast) Marisa Corcoran is offering her live masterclass Leave ‘Em Wanting More: The 3-Part Framework to Create Copy with Creativity and Chutzpah.**

It's live and totally free (no pre-recorded filler conversations here) - and perfect if you're:

  • not sure how to talk about what you do
  • tired of producing boring copy
  • feel like writing is a total drag

If you want to get better at writing copy that sells your stuff, block off an hour and get into this class.

I just love Marisa and her community support is like nothing I've ever seen. Spend an hour and get real, actionable intel on how get more of you into your copy (and have fun while doing it).

you've got this,
Michelle

p.s. *my mom still doesn't understand what I do for a living. I just tell her and the IRS that I make things for the internet.

p.p.s. **denotes affiliate link. While the Copy Chat masterclass is free, if you later decide to join Marisa's program, I'll get compensated (and you'll get some goodies from me). Please know, I only share things here that I know can help you. This is one of those things.

I never thought I'd be obsessed with guinea pigs, but well, here we are. In an effort to cheer up my nightly doomscrolling my husband sent me this reel and I'm officially hooked. Who knew it would be this brain soothing to watch animals nibble veggies for hours on end? Franky, I think the term guinea pig gets a bad rap - and I'm looking for a few to help me out. This week I've been speaking to groups all about getting more (quality) leads from repeatable activities - like connecting ManyChat...

I willingly sign up to get murdered every Friday (not to be confused with getting murdered on the show The Traitors, my other current obsession). It's the hardest class my pole studio offers - level 2/3 Drop-In Murder.Frankly, most days I have no business being in there with legit athletes, but as they say, surround yourself with people who are where you want to be.I'm over the moon if I achieve any part of that day's trick as I watch others skillfully land Cirque du Soleil level...

I couldn't help but overhear my nephew's zoom interview yesterday. He's applying to be a social media intern for some random out-of-state company found through his college career center. As soon I heard a voice say "when can you start?" I pulled up the owner's LinkedIn account to verify that it was an actual business. I *may* have also searched for any lurking court records - Aunt Michelle gets a bit protective over her flock.Duly satisfied that it was a legit biz, I checked what the company...
