inbox nudge

My friend Anika is in the midst of her Kickstarter campaign to launch her first book.

She needs 12k to make it happen by next week.

Yesterday morning I got an email that she had just crossed the 10k mark.

The genius part? In her email, she nudged early pledgers that they could upgrade their donation to help her cross the finish line.

Of course I want to be part of that - there's nothing I like more than seeing numbers go up on a screen. So I promptly raised my pledge.

This is why you have to send more emails.

Emails remind people to buy (like me).

Like last week when movement expert Marlo Fisken announced her birthday sale and thanks to a few inbox nudges I picked up a new class.

Do I have a pole at home? No.
Do I want take everything she teachers? Yes.
Do I have a million emotional support tabs on my phone open to products I want to buy? Yes.
Do I pretty much only buy stuff on my big computer? Also yes.

But writing emails that drive action (and still sound like you) is hard.

I use AI tools as much as the next chronically online person (and whoa, what I just got Claude to code makes my well-seasoned web designer brain freak out).

But I hate getting AI singsongy slop that passes for "content" these days.

If you've been on my list for any bit of time, you know emailing's the one thing I'll always do for my business (and I've got Laura Belgray to thank for that).

I've been designing her digital products for years - so I've been privy to her genius techniques (pro-tip: work for smart people and some of it will stick).

If you're ready to overhaul your email strategy, Laura's hosting a live class on the 25th called Paid To Be You: How To Cash In On Your Voice, Personality, And Realness With Emails That Sell Like A Mofo.*

Sign up for her free class* and never run out of things to write about again.

you've got this,
Michelle

p.s. Our Voxer thread would collectively get us cancelled. And she's my first call when I need to find the best restaurants anywhere in the world. Last week in Florence, ravioli to die for at Il Santo Bevitore. So trust me when you're in for a good time when you take Laura's free class.*

p.p.s. I really want to see Anika get her book published. If you work alongside entrepreneurs, funders, or community leaders, this one is for you. Let's get her to 12k!

My list of personal pet peeves is long.Dishes left overnight in the sink.Dust bunnies in yoga studio corners.Hour long meetings that could've been an email.People adding me to their random personal Substacks (shudder). But few things rile me up as much as a messy inbox. So when I saw my friend launch expert Brenna McGowan post her biggest email pet peeve (small font size), I knew I had to share mine.I sign up for a LOT of newsletters in the name of industry research. In the nebulous world of email marketing, there's surprisingly few important things to track. There's open rates. Click-Through Rates (CTR). Bounce rates. Revenue per email (RPE). And my personal favorite metric, Open to Write Back Rate (OWBR) - thank you Ann Handley for that one. But my new metric has an n-of-1. Getting Laura Belgray to open my emails right away. And as I learned talking with her this week, what gets her to open emails will likely get your readers to open yours too. Watch...
