what's your type?

The one thing I'm convinced I'm never going to do?

Write a book.

I've witnessed too many mid-draft "I don't wanna do this anymore" tantrums from clients to know I don't have it in me - and I'm in awe of anyone who actually gets one published.

While I'm never gonna write one, I do love helping people with the back-end of their book launch. A proper book launch can be just as much work as launching a digital product (and frankly, way harder to fully control).

I feel for authors who think their work is done as soon as they turn in their final draft. Publishers and publicists only get you so far - it's really on authors to get the word out.

Next week, my client Amy Kurtz releases her latest book: But You Look Fine - a book that details the limbo between sick and well that so many patients find themselves in.

But finding ways to promote books that aren't about business or money or relationships can be tricky.

So my husband Zane and I developed a custom persona-type quiz that tied into the book's premise and would generate leads to build Amy's list.

I couldn't find any decent quiz tool that looked good and could handle complex questions. So I nerded out and coded it myself instead.

Here's how we put it together:

  1. Zane wrote the structure of the weighted quiz (he does the hard math around here, but somehow I end up doing our taxes!) It's a special type of quiz where the user can make two selections at once - giving the option for more robust questions and complex answers.
  2. I coded the quiz into a custom WordPress plugin that ties into Kit* (my preferred email tool). When users finish the quiz, they're prompted to enter their email address to get their result. They're auto-tagged inside Kit and sent a custom email sequence with their specific response.
  3. I then created a quick ManyChat* trigger to spur interest on instagram - all the user has to do is comment a trigger word to get the quiz link in their DMs.

Check out the quiz in action here - what's your patient type?

Curious about book launch support for your next big work? I'm considering opening up a few spots for late 2026 / early 2027 support (and yes, it takes months). Just hit reply and let me know what you're working on.

you've got this,
Michelle

p.p.s. My tantrums mainly revolve around getting designs out and dealing with unsolicited feedback. There's no way I could deal with editors and gen pop book reviews. Kudos to all the authors out there!

I recoiled as I opened up my latest Poshmark score.Dark yellow stains on the back of crisp white jeans.Did they really think I wouldn't notice? I try not to buy a lot of new clothing - there's enough out there on the secondhand market to quench one's insomnia-driven shopping sprees (and frankly trying on pants in a store ranks up there with getting a cavity filled). But it goes to show that people are getting S L O P P Y (a notion I've shared with no less than 3 fellow business friends over...

"Can you explain this to me? Do I need to worry about this?"I get these kinds of emails whenever a client gets sent an automated analytics report (and let me tell you, a lot of tools don't make them easy to understand - looking at you Google Search Console). The reality is most business owners have no idea how to find the metrics that matter. And often they don't even know what questions they should be asking. These days we've got access to more data than we know what to do with - but slogging...

May the notoriously finicky Amtrak wi-fi gods bless me right now. I'm on the train headed to Boston to visit one of my favorite clients and I figured this would be an apt moment to answer a reader question that came in yesterday. "Your email last week (this one move saved 2500 a month) on saving money by auditing your subscriptions really inspired me! I'm downsizing my business and realizing Kit is one of my highest expenses. I could save a lot by getting rid of Kit and using Kajabi for my...
