does Google know who you are?

Reviewing a new site design with one of my favorite clients this week, she asked me a question.

Why don't I show up the same way in Google as other dudes in her field?

And by "that way" she meant the following format when she Googles her name.

This block of info at the top of the search results is called a Google Knowledge Panel. The display is generated based on info stored and organized by Google's Knowledge Graph.

The block typically displays photos of you, books you've written, your recent social media posts, podcasts you've been on, your social media profiles and your bio. The format and content may vary slightly for everyone.

(Note: Google Knowledge Panels are for personal brands and individuals, not companies - for that, look at creating a Google Business Profile.)

Not sure if you've got one? Check for yourself.

  1. Google your name and see what shows up.
  2. If you DO have a knowledge panel, go ahead and "claim" the knowledge panel. See the screenshot above - click the three dots to show the option to claim your panel.
  3. You'll need to fill out a form to verify that you are who you say you are. And it won't be instantaneous -you'll probably have to wait a month or so for them to accept your claim. More info here on how to get verifed on Google.

Don't have a knowledge panel to claim? Don't fret - not everyone has one and it's not the end of the world. I'll share next week what you can do to spur the process along and influence what gets shown by the big G.

you've got this,
Michelle

No dancing, no reaching cookies on high shelves, and definitely no hot tubs (or "bacteria factories" as my surgeon calls them). But I'm not that sad about unfettered time to catch up with friends and watch long-form documentaries like the epic one about Billy Joel.I was catch-up voxing last week when my friend told me she was...

Officially day seven without coffee. No one tells you that one thing you really should avoid during post-surgery recovery is the sweet nectar of caffeine. Yadda, yadda, something about dehydration and delayed healing.Gah, I miss it. I don't have many vices these days. It's hard breaking my well-worn habit of hitting the Nespresso button twice while simultaneously checking my inbox and shoveling 20 grams of protein milk into my giant cup of joe in an effort to appease the internet macros gods.I...
