this one move saved 2500 a month

All summer I've been repeating this phrase.

Outside is expensive. (Frankly, inside is expensive too - have you seen the price of decent Parmesan cheese?)

A couple of weeks ago, folks were in a tizzy over the abrupt Squarespace price increase. (The 25% hike was pretty egregious in my opinion and they've since somewhat adjusted it.)

And it reminded me to do my mid-year tech-stack review and reduce session.

Here's exactly how to save money on your tech spend:

1. Reduce the plan you're on.

First step - see if you can downgrade your account. It's generally much simpler to downgrade your plan versus migrating to a new platform. Often you're not using all the features and you won't miss a thing. Generally I've seen savings of $50-$100 a month by simply swapping to a lower cost plan. You might also save a LOT by switching from a monthly to an annual plan (generally 2-3 months of savings). Places to look first: web hosting, course platforms, email marketing, internet services.

2. Cancel what you're not using.

The average consumer has over 12 paid subscriptions. (I counted: I'm at over 30 between personal and business. And we're not going to mention my fitness app addiction.) Plus many of us have a bit of domain hoarding problem (pot, meet this red-headed kettle). $20 here, $25 there. It all adds up. I was paying $1000 a year just in domain renewals past me thought future me would want to use. Current me knows better.

3. Delete the dead weight.

Some services (like your email marketing service) are priced based on number of subscribers. So many people are reluctant to delete people off their list - but doing a regular clean out of inactive subscribers or non-action takers is a SMART way to increase your deliverability and make room for the folks who do want to pay you.

4. Migrate to a new service.

If you've gone through the steps above, it may be time to move to a new tool. Migrating to a new service (especially if your business heavily relies on it) takes some upfront planning, but the savings can be substantial. I just migrated a client off of one email platform over to Kit and we're saving over 30k a year (and we've got better features like native integration with ManyChat to boot).

Turns out I love doing steps #3 and #4 - especially when it comes to email. I've been quietly cleaning and migrating lists for some big creators the last few months. Just call me the call me the Marie Kondo of email - I love to save people money and lessen their tech woes.

I recoiled as I opened up my latest Poshmark score.Dark yellow stains on the back of crisp white jeans.Did they really think I wouldn't notice? I try not to buy a lot of new clothing - there's enough out there on the secondhand market to quench one's insomnia-driven shopping sprees (and frankly trying on pants in a store ranks up there with getting a cavity filled). But it goes to show that people are getting S L O P P Y (a notion I've shared with no less than 3 fellow business friends over...

"Can you explain this to me? Do I need to worry about this?"I get these kinds of emails whenever a client gets sent an automated analytics report (and let me tell you, a lot of tools don't make them easy to understand - looking at you Google Search Console). The reality is most business owners have no idea how to find the metrics that matter. And often they don't even know what questions they should be asking. These days we've got access to more data than we know what to do with - but slogging...

May the notoriously finicky Amtrak wi-fi gods bless me right now. I'm on the train headed to Boston to visit one of my favorite clients and I figured this would be an apt moment to answer a reader question that came in yesterday. "Your email last week (this one move saved 2500 a month) on saving money by auditing your subscriptions really inspired me! I'm downsizing my business and realizing Kit is one of my highest expenses. I could save a lot by getting rid of Kit and using Kajabi for my...
